ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice explores how music - an invisible and temporal experience - can take visual and spatial form.

My relationship with music comes from a lifetime of listening, performing and teaching. Rather than illustrating music, I am interested in what remains through the experience of it: rhythm, tension, repetition, movement, silence, memory and emotional resonance. I am also drawn to the structures within music and to the ways in which they can be transformed into an independent visual language.

Silence is particularly important in my work. I am interested not only in music after it is heard, but also in the moment before sound begins—the stillness of a score waiting to be played, the physical tension of strings, and the shared anticipation between performer and audience before the first note.

Working across drawing, painting, installation, found objects, digital media and moving image, I explore these ideas through line, interval, colour, repetition, light, shadow and physical space. At times the work moves beyond the surface into what I think of as “drawing in space.”

My ongoing enquiry, Image of Music, has developed over more than three decades. Through it, I continue to explore how an experience that cannot be physically held—music—might leave a visual, material and spatial presence.

CHACONNE SERIES

The Chaconne Series developed with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Chaconne from the Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004.

Beyond the Form — Chaconne explores the visual resonance of Bach’s Chaconne through rhythm, repetition, tension and movement. Rather than illustrating the music, the paintings translate the experience of listening and remembering into colour, structure and gesture.
